What is Communities First?

The Communities First programme is a long-term strategy (Minimum of 10 Years commencing 2001) for improving the living conditions and prospects for people living in the most disadvantaged communities in Wales. Both Sandfields wards, East and West come under the Communities First Scheme. In 2007 the communities first program was expanded to include 3 parts of the Aberavon ward based on their ranking in the Welsh index of multiple deprivation. A team of 3 staff working each of the wards to implement the Sandfields Aberavon neighbourhood plan.

Communities Next - Consultation on the future of the Communities First programme.

The programme seeks to ensure that the funds and support available from the Welsh Assembly Government and other public sector agencies are targeted at these areas in order for them to become more prosperous and to provide more opportunities for those living in and around these areas. In order to succeed, you the residents of Sandfields need to be involved and this is the reason why Sandfields First was set up.
